OK, I could not help it with another light thread. If those are candles, then these guys are trying to set the building on fire. What else could it be in 1786, gas?

What is the source of the lights?

Google Translated: "Image of the Illumination on the occasion of the Anniversary of the Hondert and fifty years of the Oprechting of the Utrecht Academy at the expense of the Heeren Students, Under Direction and after the invention of the painter P.J. Muller, the 31 May 1786"

And if somebody knows, what's this Utrecht Academy?

pretty strange that close up, it almost looks like someone edited those "candles" in, looks like the same thing we see in every other anomalous lighting image

And if somebody knows, what's this Utrecht Academy?
looks like a college or some university

Ok, I found some information about this.

In an Dutch newspaper of 1786 called the "Leeuwarder Courant" dated 4th of june (04-06-1786, in the archive, newpaper says 7th of june somehow?) There is an article that describes the festivities and talks about lanterns. & Illuminations... The building that is on the photo is probably "Het Kasteel van Antwerpen" (Castle of Antwerp) that is actually located in Utrecht.
The exact address is :
Oudegracht Weerdzijde 50 te Utrecht. N.B. Het adres Oudegracht Weerdzijde 50 which was changed in 1917to : Oudegracht 129
This "Antwerp Castle" is part of the University of Utrecht (Academy of Utrecht)

Link to newspaper article 1786: Gevonden in Delpher - Leeuwarder courant

I've also found an older "Illumination picture" of 1779 that takes place there.... see it attached.... The Castle of Antwerp seems to be part of an old "star fortress" too, which I found via this link : Gezicht op de voorgevel van het hotel Het Oude kasteel van Antwerpen (Oudegracht Weerdzijde 50) te Utrecht. N.B. Het adres Oudegracht Weerdzijde 50 is in 1917 gewijzigd in Oudegracht 129. | Bekijken | Utrecht Altijd

More info: Hotel Kasteel van Antwerpen - Wikimapia

and : Vredenburg Castle - Wikipedia

Look how this building looked before (look at the roof) compared to now: Hotel Kasteel van Antwerpen - Wikimapia

Strange stuff going on here....

Ok.... apparently it's not the castle of Antwerp (but strange that they have the same type of illumination thing going on there too in 1779 ! The original pic posted by Korben is an address called the "Place Royal" (now a theater : Schiller Theater Place Royale - Utrecht ) located at the Minrebroederstraat 11, 3512 GS Utrecht

The building( or decor) with the illumination is also made by the painter apparently see info here : Minrebroederstraat 21 Utrecht | Huizen aan het Janskerkhof

So 2 dutch newspapers from that "week' talk about the same thing (festivities & illuminations for the 150th celebration of the Academy of Utrecht) , but with Illuminations going on in 2 different locations :

1 > Gevonden in Delpher - Groninger courant talks about illuminiations at "Place Royal"
2 > Gevonden in Delpher - Leeuwarder courant talks about illuminations at "Kasteel van Antwerp"

I attended Utrecht University in 1998, but I don’t remember seeing any building that resembles the painting in the OT. And when you look at a current photo of the Schiller Theater, it doesn’t look like the building in the painting.

I’ve searched through photos of campus buildings but have yet to find one that looks similar.

Correct, it's long gone and we directly have the answer for the "mystery" lanterns and grease-cups
