The Betrothal of Jason and Medea, 1487

The coats of arms that appear above the two ships represented on this panel are those of two great families of Florentine bankers: a detail which has made it possible to deduce that the painting was made on the occasion of the marriage of Lorenzo Tornabuoni and Giovanna di Maso Albizzi in 1486.

It was part of a decorative ensemble made up of woodwork and furniture relating the story of Jason, commissioned from various painters for the room of the newlyweds. The Encounter of Jason and Medea , entrusted to Biaggio d'Antonio, perhaps adorned a bedstead .
