I wonder what the method of backfilling was supposed to be.
Men with buckets/weary locals after the 'mudflood' digging out the basement flats or something? A big whooosshhh from the heavens as a dust storm howled through? What else could it be? Storing debris from relatively modern building sites? No bodies/bones seem to be uncovered so they probably did live there at one time during the 1600/1700 upheavals and kept it neat until this backfill. Curiouser and curiouser.

Liverpool is my home town and in fact I grew up in Edge Hill, up until a few years ago I had never heard anybody speak about these tunnels, not a soul, even though I had extensive family living there. When I first read about them it said they were built to keep local men in employment which does seem a rather elaborate way of doing that.
